Artist's Description

The rhinoceros is the most endangered species in Africa. Rampant poaching has reduced the number of Rhinos from 100,000 in the 1960’s to just 2500 in Africa. Out of these, less than 50 survive in Tanzania of which 19 exist in the Ngorongoro crater. The huge decline in numbers of this ancient and massive animal is the high commercial value of their horns. In the crater too , by 1990 only 10 rhinos were left. However with major conservation efforts and airlifting of a female and her calf to the crater in December 1997, the population stablised and is now showing signs of increase. Shot this photograph of the black rhino grazing near the lake in the crater. The pink spots on the lake are flamingos, which were present in thousands. June 30th 2015
