Description
The Alster lake was created in medieval times ( early 13th century) by damming the Alster river into a water reservoir to power the mills that were operating on it’s banks. It now consists of an outer Alster and an inner Alster and flows into the Elbe river. The outer Alster is surrounded by ancient trees, elegant houses and numerous cafes and restaurants with a splendid view of the lake. The Alster is a central part of Hamburg city life and when the sun is out, the lakes fill up with sailors, paddlers and rowers.
This photograph was taken from the rear of the cruise boat on the lake.
